Significance of the Nirayana Zodiac
Difference between Western and Indian Zodiac
Although the Western and Indian astrological systems share the significance for signs in the zodiac, in order, their position in sky or rather along the ecliptic is shifted with respect to each other. In Western system (called Sayana system) the 0° of Aries starts at the point of vernal equinox and the sign changes at an angular distance of 30° from the beginning of the previous sign. Thus the Western Zodiac shifts every year along with the point of vernal equinox along the ecliptic. But in Indian system (called Nirayana system) the 0° of Mesha (the sign equivalent to Aries in Indian system) is always fixed near a point opposite to star spica on the ecliptic and thus does not move with respect to the stars. In these blogs we will be using Indian names of signs to emphasize Indian system of Zodiac.

Signs indicate the places according to their element. Watery signs show places related to water and liquids, Fire signs show places related to fire, Airy signs signify places with breeze and airy places, Earthy places indicate places related to earth, metals, wood and in general solid objects. The measure of the element increases from Mesha to Meena. So, quantity of water indicated by Karka is usually smaller compared to the same indicated by Vrishchik, which in turn shows lesser quantity compared to Meena. Thus, Karka would show a small pond whereas Meena indicates the ocean. Mithuna indicates a small airy compartment and Kumbha a large window.
